New Director Appointed to St Patricks Day Parade
Galway City Council has announced the appointment of Caroline McDonagh as Director of the St Patricks Day parade. She has taken over the role from Craig Flaherty who was the Director for the past three years. Caroline, a Galway native has a long history of involvement in the arts and has worked with many local and community initiatives.
Speaking about her appointment, Caroline said: ‘I honoured and delighted to have been appointed to this role. Galway City Council and I look forward to working with local businesses, arts groups and the local community.’
She added, ‘St Patricks Day has always been about the St Patricks Day Parade and this will remain the focus of celebrations here in Galway. The St Patrick's Day Parade in Galway is a platform to showcase local artists and community groups and a wonderful opportunity to see groups and bands that come from all over the world to parade through the medieval streets of Galway. It is a great day out for all the family’.
This year, 2012 marks the 109th anniversary of the Galway St Patrick's Day Parade and the Galway parade will feature an exciting mix of marching bands, local community groups, dancing groups, pipe bands and local business floats. With groups coming from all over the world, expect the streets to burst into life as the centre of the city is set to become transformed by a riot of colour and sound.
The Parade route moves through the centre of the medieval City, a 2.5 km (1.5 mile) journey through narrow cobbled streets, turning onto long, wide streets. The magical atmosphere created by the Galway Festival attracts up to 50,000 people every year, who line the narrow streets of the medieval city.
The St Patricks Day Parade organisers are welcoming applications for all groups involved in community initiatives and groups including: theatre, bands, performance, dance, music, sport, youth, carnival, vintage cars or simply surprise us with your ideas and imagination.
This year there will prizes under a number of categories which will be announced at a later date on the website.
